Sweet.. The Smiths - This Charming Man
Lyrics:
Punctured bicycle
on a hillside desolate
will Nature make a man of me yet?
When in this charming car
this charming man
Why ponder life's complexities
when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat?
I would go out tonight
but I haven't got a stitch to wear
this man said "It's gruesome
that someone so handsome should care"
A jumped-up pantry boy
who never knew his place
he said "return the rings"
he knows so much about these things
he knows so much about these things
I would go out tonight
but I haven't got a stitch to wear
this man said "It's gruesome
that someone so handsome should care"
This charming man
this charming man
A jumped-up pantry boy
who never knew his place
he said "return the ring"
he knows so much about these things
he knows so much about these things
he knows so much about these things
I always wanted to try out the music of the smiths. For some reason, I never got around to doing it before, until I found some time a couple of days back. That moment when I started listening to the first song, I knew I was theirs.
The Smiths, a British band formed in 1982, lead by Steven Morrisey exploded to become one of the biggest bands during the early and late 80's. They have at least 4 studio albums under their belt with a couple more ep's to their discography. Flirting with each of these albums one by one, the music grows, matures and tells stories that are so well crafted you can't help but bounce and sing along to them, almost 30 years after they were made. What does that say about them and their music? The Smiths are nothing short of timeless but at the same time edgy yet refreshing all in a single press of the play button. The Smiths deserve more adjectives to elaborate, but for the time being, I'd like to talk about the track.
Hazy and obscure, the lyrics point to different directions that can be interpreted in many ways. With it's flow and narrative though, a lot of people think that it is about a disturbed man trying to find out about his sexuality. Then again, there are takes that it is about a couple trying to find themselves together. Whichever way, the ambiguity works well and I would just like to think about it as a really nice song for the lost. An anthem perhaps that can be said of every person in the circumstance of finding themselves and what they really want. Searching is never easy. But as soon as you recognize and open yourself to what and who you really are, it becomes soft, almost linear that all you have to do is embrace it..
As Morrisey would say, "would nature make a man of me yet?" It's up to you what you'd like to do about it. Man or Woman.
